Animals
The species of animals that live in the savanna depend on the location of the biome. The animals that live in savannas have adapted to a great deal of variability in the food supply throughout the year. During the rainy season many animals thrive, but the rainy season is only for 6-8 months. Many animals such as giraffes, zebras, antelopes, wildebeests, lions, elephants, and many more live in the savanna.
Elephant: The savanna elephant or the African bush elephant can grow up to be 13 ft tall at the shoulders on average. Males are 10.8 ft tall at the shoulders, and females only at 8.7 ft tall at the shoulders. They weigh about 5,000 to 14,000 lbs. Elephants are Herbivore and eat, roots, grasses, fruit, and bark. Their ears radiate heat to help keep the large animals cool. Elephants live up to seventy years, and die when their molars wear down.
Plain Zebra: Plain Zebras are smaller than the other species of zebras. They range in height from 3.5-5 ft, and can weigh almost 100lbs. Zebras have very good hearing and eyesight to helps them stay clear of predators like lions and hyenas. Plain zebras spend the majority of their day grazing on grass. They are herbivores, they eat a variety of grasses, shrubs, twigs, and leaves.
Lion: Lions are 4.5 to 6.5 ft long and 26 to 39 in tall. They also weigh 300 to 500 lbs. Lions are Carnivores and eat large animals such as, antelopes, zebras, and wildebeests. Male lions are generally larger than female lions and have a distinctive mane of hair around their heads. Lions live in groups called prides, male lions usually defend territory's witch range to 100 square miles long.
